Taken: A Parable

Loosely based on Liam Neeson

Okay, maybe more than loosely based.

There once was a Father who had a son and a daughter He had brought into the family. They had a great relationship. You could say it was literal paradise. But then something happened. The two kids went off on their own way. They didn’t listen to the wisdom and warnings of the Father.

Enter into this story another character, the deceiver, the enemy, the serpent. He had a hand (did he have hands?), let’s say he whispered in the kids’ ears – don’t listen to Daddy, Daddy didn’t mean what you think He meant, He just wants to keep you down.

So, the kids disobeyed and lost their place in Paradise. It looked as if the enemy had won, as if the man and woman would forever have lost their relationship with the Father.

But the Father had a plan. This plan involved His only begotten Son. The Son got on the phone with the enemy …

“I know who you are. I know what you want. If you’re looking for ransom, I can tell you it is the Father who will be paid the ransom. What I do have for you are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. I will come for my family, I will pay the price for them … and I will destroy you.”

The enemy responds … Good Luck.

Now, the enemy should be shaking, and he might have. Years went past. Centuries. Millenia.

The Father sent spokesman to encourage the lost ones. Promises were made. The Plan was laid out – sometimes subtly – but it was there.

And then, the Plan (which had been put into motion long before any of this took place) began to happen. But not the way the people expected. Not with grandeur, or pomp, or showiness – but humbly, in a manger … then meek in serving others … and finally a painful grotesque punishment on a cross.

Had the enemy won? Had the Son been defeated and those taken lost forever? Had the Father’s Plan been waylaid? Would the Plan forever be beaten by a stone rolled in front of it?

Wait. One.

It’s so dark. Two.

It looks hopeless. THREE!

Something’s happening. The stone is rolling. The sun is rising. The grotto is empty. EMPTY.

The Father’s plan worked. The price the Taken owed had been paid. The Taken now have restored relationship with the Father.

The End!

Roll Credits … the star of this show, the Son, has a name. Jesus.

———–

Hold on … there is a sequel coming. The enemy is not done. He still fights. There is a Plan for this too. The Son is also the hero in this Plan. The first time He came as a Lamb … meek, humble, a sacrifice paying the price. This time He comes as a Lion … in power, conqueror, setting all things anew! And this time – He takes His own home. Taken!
