Survival Meals Tried

It was Star Wars Day – May 4th. But instead of eating floating fruit from Naboo or drinking Blue milk or having a cookie cookie, I had some camping pre-made tactical food. Though these Wookie Cookies look gingerly scrumptious.

This isn’t a food blog, and I don’t cook too much. And when I do cook, It’s pretty basic – no special chef presentations even though I did cook at a steakhouse in my high school days.

I mentioned in previous posts that I am a glamper, not a camper. However, I have been collecting and trying some prepared backpacking meals. One of the brands I got was “Beyond”” which has been tagged as tactical food, it’s created for those that are more than ordinary.

OUR MISSION

We don’t make average outdoor meals because
you’re not an ordinary trailblazer.
For those who aspire to do more and be more…
Go Boldly and adventure beyond.

So on May 4th, my wife and I tried two different packs. I had the Chili Mac. She tried the Orange Chicken. Both were tasty, hearty, and fulfilling. They weren’t extreme in flavor, but were very basic and perfect for the simple guy like me.

Each packet was said to have two servings. Yeah, right. More like one a a half, though I enjoyed the whole bag.

Ample in protein (40g per packet) and low sugar adds to the benefit. It also has 720 calories, not bad for those out in nature. Though may wife thought that was a bit high, but she eats like a bird, I found it right in range of a normal meal.

They are lightweight, and are in durable bags. They are sourced locally from the packaging plant, which aids to the freshness. They have a ten year shelf life, so feel free to stock up and not worry.

You add a cup (or 1.25 cups) of boiling water right in the bag. Reseal the ziplock on the bag. and wait ten minutes. You can eat right out of the bag or pour into a bowl.

Retail was listed at $15 per bag but that was for two servings, so not too high a cost. And you can get good prices if you shop in quantity are order from camping outlet and survival supply places.

Bottom line – this experience isn’t going to get me out pitching tents or walking the entire AT trail. I will stick with the day hikes, simple short excursions, and sleeping in my own bed. But maybe, just maybe … eating like this makes me think I could survive a while in the wild, just not too wild.
