Lessons From A 2-Year Old (part 1)

Have you ever thought that God often looks at us like we look at taking care of a two-year old … we are needy, little, snot-nosed kids.

Last week, my wife and I got to take care of our grandkids. It’s probably the longest we’ve been with them in a while. It started with my wife going to Texas to spend the weekend. Then they all came back this way, to North Carolina while my DIL had a conference with her new vocational endeavor. The eldest grandkid (our two-year old grandkid) came to Virginia (this was a three-state engagement).

Much happened over the 10 days. So over the next several days, God slapped me around some to teach me, and He taught me a lot! So, I’m gonna pass a few of these lessons along to you. Why? Because you too are a lot like a two-year old(just like me.)

Today’s Lesson – They may look cute, innocent, and a bundle of joy … but they are a big-time mess maker.

Our house was basically straight … vacuumed, dusted, blinds even, TV screen without apple juice finger prints. Sofa pillows were, surprise, on the couch and not the floor. The vehicles were straight with clean floors and very little food particles (my wife won’t let me eat in her car!)

Now … after just a few days … toys scattered, pillows thrown, dinosaurs and cows and cars everywhere. The Glade Essential Oil aromas are battling the size 2 and size 6 diaper scents. The TV has tiny little finger prints. The blinds are all askew as they blocked the toddler’s view of Sandy, the neighbor’s beautiful brown horse. The sofa has a new spot where the 5 month old left an expulsion from his mouth. (thank God it was from his mouth!)

My brain is a mess too. There is a worm in there that is Danny Go singing The Fire Truck Song … Weeohh, Wee-eee-eeeoh … Lord, help me.

My kitchen has sticky floors from the Apple Juice drippings. And my laundry baskets are overflowing.

And the car, we will probably find things under the seat, thrown in the back end, and stuck down in the fold for months.

They may look cute, innocent, and a bundle of joy … but they are a big-time mess maker. But I wouldn’t trade the week for anything.

They may be a mess maker, but I love them all the same.

Okay, now I get it God. I make a mess. I leave carnage in relationships; I destroy the things God blesses me with; and I never really appreciate all that He does for me. Yet in all of this, nothing can separate us from your love. I know You hate the mess, you desire so much more from me, and you still turn around and bless me.

We see it over and over in Scripture … David and Bathsheba, Jacob deceiving Esau, Peter denying you, Paul persecuting those you love … you still love them. You still love us.

There is nothing we could do to make God love us any less, and nothing we could do to make God love us any more.

And this week, I was reminded of that lesson from a two-year old.
