It’s coming. Get ready. Maybe even get out. News reports, weather updates, phone alarms. It’s all part of the alert system set into place to prepare oneself.
Think back to Noah’s day. No weather app. No nightly news having a green-screen showing you something was up. No global warming alarmist filling up Twitter or FaceBook. Yet, there were two groups of people. First, Noah … obeying God and preparing for something that would be centuries away. Gathering gopher wood, herding animals, storing food, and probably being laughed at by the second group. The second group, everybody else … wicked, corrupt, not following God’s ways. And, obviously, not preparing.

And today, let’s look at the weather and people preparing for a flood (or ice, or tornado, or anything.) They buy extra insurance. They stock up … food, water, batteries, and maybe even forms of protection (I do live in a 2d Amendment county!) They prepare for an event they hope never happens and they have a plan.
Then there are those that ignore the meteorologists, They expect Krogers to always have full shelves and local diners to have food. They don’t stock up and they too hope that the event never happens … and they don’t have a plan.
Do we trust our government and FEMA to take care of us? Do we think it will never be so bad that we can’t get supplies? How many movies on the Apocalypse or bad times do we have to ignore (The Postman, Day of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Walking Dead, Left Behind, and more)
North Carolina and Virginia mountains got hit hard. Helene was not gentle. And no matter how much one prepared, there are areas that it really wouldn’t matter, the devastation was brutal.
Though not prepared for a broken dam and runaway water, I do have enough for a few weeks if the dock workers go on strike (I stocked up on toilet paper … no 2021 for me!!))

But I want us to think long term. There is an inevitable event we can’t ignore. There will come a day thatches life is over. And you can’t stock up food or supplies for the afterlife. You can’t build a shelter that will stop its effects hitting you. And there is no running to the store after the fact.
But there is good news. You can prepare. But you can prepare only one way … an eternal insurance policy as is … Belief in Jesus Christ and His gift of eternal life.
- Some will ignore it
- Some will deny it
- Some will think they can get ready and be prepared on their own
- and others … will trust Jesus
And this last group, like Noah, like storm-preppers … will be prepared. One day you will stand before the throne judgement will take place … are you prepared?
