I credit this post ripped from the local AppomattoxVFD … I hope they don’t mind.

February 24, 2016 — A Day We Will Never Forget

On this day in ten years ago, the tones dropped during what seemed like just another strong storm. Within minutes, we realized this was something far different. Our community was being torn apart by one of the most devastating weather events we had ever experienced, an EF3 Tornado.

Homes were destroyed. Families were displaced. Lives were forever changed.

In the middle of the chaos, with an empty fire house, responders from one end of the county to the other, and emotions running high, something powerful emerged: unity. Neighbors helping neighbors. Strangers becoming family. Firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, and mutual aid volunteers from near and far answering the call without hesitation.

We will never forget the loss, the devastation or the pain that day caused. But we also will never forget the strength, resilience and compassion our community demonstrated, not just that day but in the long days of recovery that followed.

February 24, 2016 reminded us that even in our darkest hours, this community stands together.

And that is something worth remembering.
