Crunchy Grass

Baby, it’s cold outside.

It is cold. Oh, I guess it could be colder. Our little community last night put out a weather warning of a “freezing fog.” Freezing Fog is when water droplets from fog freeze upon contact with objects they encounter. Why? Because the water is supercooled. That’s sounds wild. I would love to be called ‘supercool’! What’s supercool (besides me)? It’s when the water is liquid but it’s temperature is below freezing. Okay, that’s the meteorological science lesson for today.

What does this mean for me? It means when I went outside early today, it was cold. The truck was iced up, not only the window but sides, tires, and door handles. Wasn’t sure if I was going to break the door handle trying to get in. But, patience and persistence won the day.

An interesting thing this morning was … crunchy grass. That title sounds like a CBD oats grain bar put out by Nature Hippy Valley. I digress. Maybe I should say frozen blades, but that sounds like a movie that is a parody of the Winter Olympics. So I’ll stick with crunchy grass.

The grass was frozen so solid … yet there was no snow, no ice covering, nothing. Just clean, crunchy grass. I heard the crunch. I felt the crunch. And I left foot prints in grass that was neither muddy or snowy. I then started to think that I might be damaging the grass. It was so hard, frozen, so inflexible that every step was potentially cracking the blades in half.

As the sun rose and the warmth from the sunshine fell upon the lawn, the grass began to thaw. The frozen blades thawed, the footprints faded, and the ice turned to liquid and nourished the soil.

Sometimes we are the hard shoes on the grass. Sometimes we are the grass. Life can turn cold and hard. It can make us hard as well. And it seems people often walk all over us, even damaging us in ways. But in the warmth of the sun, or our case, the warmth of the Son, we find hope, we find life.

So don’t give up. Even when life is tough, God is still there. You may not see the sun, but we know it’s there and will rise. Sometimes God is silent. It seems He is absent. But God is still on the throne.

Here’s my challenge to you. The world will continue to get difficult and hard and cold (this is about spiritual coldness, not climate change). So stay in the Word. Remember the truths of His presence, provision, and protection. That wisdom will keep your heart warm in a cold world.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus
