Waiting for the Call

FORT WORTH Road Trip – April 2024

Have you ever been eager for something? On pins and needles waiting for something? What is it, the expectation? The sense of fresh starts, new adventures, something spectacular to add to our lives?

My next destination, CowTown, Fort Worth, the sister city of Dallas.

It’s over 1000 miles away from the little community in the foothills of the Virginia mountains. We need to be ready at the drop of a pin … or more specifically, at the ringtone of an iPhone. My only son and the beautiful DIL were expecting child #2. They were actually expecting him the previous week, but kids come at their own schedule. Our bags were packed. We were ready to go. What we could load in the car early, we did.

So, here we go, grab the final luggage, head to Hill City to get my wife from work, fill up with gas, head west. Through the mountains. Crossing four states.

I love traveling with my wife. She helps when I have to sleep, except when it is the same time she has to sleep. We stopped at Buc-ees. We moved our clock back when we changed time-zones. We ate fast food. We missed rush hour everywhere. And, we arrived in DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) early in the AM.

We arrived early Wednesday morning but no baby yet. Since we got there a little early, we did what we do every time we can when we go through Dallas – we eat at Café Brazil. The coffee, the crepes, the eggs, the coffee.

We then made two side treks, short but important.

The first stop … the funeral home where my Mother-in-Law was resting.

Here is a weird story. While there, a FedEx truck was driving around the cemetery. A FedEx truck. Who would be getting a delivery? Who would sign for it? This could get really eerie. What would they get? I mean in 1 Samuel 28 the king used a medium to talk to the dead prophet Samuel. (Not gonna talk about the right or wrong here, just that it happened.) He talked and he listened, but he didn’t give him anything. So, what was FedEx up to?

If you could send something to someone that has passed away, what would it be? A thank you card? A payment on an unpaid debt? A gift for a missed birthday?

Not sure why, just curious.

The second stop … a drive to look at the new Ryan, Inc building in Frisco. My lovely wife worked for Ryan. She moved with me to Virginia before Ryan moved into their new location, so this was a fun excursion.

No matter where we go in life, we are always made up of the pieces to our life from our past – good, bad, neutral. We are more than the sum of these events, but we are not less. Ryan has offices in the Galleria area. Now they also have offices in Legacy West of Frisco.

Then we arrived at the little home-castle in northeast Fort Worth.

She was in labor, minimally so. She was very eager, extremely so. Here we go … a baby is close. We drove 20 hours and still made it in time. The baby would come in the hours of the late afternoon.

Waiting is a part of life. Waiting is annoying. Waiting is _____________ (you fill in the blank.)

Waiting is reality.

So, now let’s talk about the baby and what that teaches us. You’ll have to wait ’till Monday.
