It’s a lost virtue. To some, it’s almost offensive to hold a door for someone else … (I don’t need your help. I can take care of my self.) And occasionally, I’ve been trapped holding a door for a long line of people … I open for one and the rest keep coming, and keep coming, and keep coming … seeing me as nothing less than a piece of the door’s function.
It’s weird, (there I am again, weird, and I own it … Keep pastordude weird) and my brain gets blown. “BBHHWW!” Is it expected so I do it? Is it offensive so I don’t? Is it okay for someone to open for me? Do I let go if I get caught holding a door for many and my posse is being moved on by the crowd’s push? Again, mind blown – “BBHHWW!”

So, looking at Psalm 84:10 I see the wonderful aspect of being a door holder in His Kingdom work. And I realize how important a door holder is at church. So what is the role of a door holder? What should we expect from ourselves being a door holder and from our own door holders?

Door Holders … Protect the Worshippers
We keep out those that don’t belong. We make sure the place is protected. It’s not about security, but safety.
Door Holders … Point the way for the Worshippers
This is more than just greeting and directing those who haven’t been there before, it is about help keeping all the worshippers together, keeping them connected to each other, and setting hedges that keep the worshippers on the path. This diminishes distractions and keeps worshippers focused.
Door Holders … Prepare and Pump Up the Worshippers
Our smile, our excitement, our anticipation of people gathering to worship. We encourage expressive passion or set a solemness to sacredness. We encourage, exhort, and edify. A musical praise team is there not to entertain but to encourage participation. This is the impact of a First Impression. Friendliness? Judgmental? Warm? Cold? Joyous? Lamentful? What does your body language, your words, your facial expression … Pump up or Pull Down?
Let’s be a good door holder in the Kingdom of God. It’s better than a thousand elsewhere!
