Sometimes, my mind has thoughts that just ramble around in there. Today, I ponder the broad concept of TREES.
It’s Amazing!! The diversity of trees that line the trails in the parks, forests, parkways all over the state. As I have travelled to parks and mountains and forests across the Continental US, I have been delighted to see an even greater variety. What causes this diversity? Climate? Altitude? Impact of man’s expansion? God’s way of keeping us guessing?

Trees have represented so many things through the centuries. They have connected to strength and majesty (the Cedars of Lebanon) … they have been connected to health and fruitfulness (the Fig Tree and/or the Olive Tree) … they have been connected to shelter and rest (the Broom Tree) … they have been connected to peace (the Olive Branch/Tree) … even praise (the Palm Tree that grows straight to heaven and were used on the Jesus’ Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem and even used in art in the Tabernacle and Temple.)
And think of the concept of eternal life in the evergreen trees. And the Myrtle Tree symbolizes restoration. Let’s not forget the story of the Dogwood (the state tree of Virginia.)
Life, growth, provision, peace, blessings. So many great symbolisms.
They can also have a negative concept. The Cedar is often connected to pride. Crooked and knotted trees mean a wasted life. And how it was a curse to be hung upon a tree … but Jesus flipped that understanding and took his crucifixion from a punishment to a crucial part of God’s Gospel of Grace.
I also pondered if there was any sport team with a tree as a mascot? And the answer is yes. But I warn them to stay away from the Oregon State Beavers.
Trees. I love trees. Climb them. Rest under them. Hide in their shade. Take in their aroma, feel the smooth grain, and listen to the limbs creek and moan.
Give God a special thank you for the gift of trees.
