- Resort with all the perks (spa, pool, restaurant, coffee)?
- Rent a cabin (in woods or on beach, just a simple cabin close to happenings.)?
- Glamp in the wilderness, but not too far into the wilderness?
- Camp with a tent … all on your own?
We have arrived … 1am in the morning. But we have arrived. Over 1900 miles. One little glitch in the new CrossTrek – but not a bad issue, unless we were going to be ascending mountain roads all the time.
In the new car, they give you the oil temperature. This is relatively new to me. Car, radiator, overheating … that I understand.
Years ago, I had a Fiat Spyder (Classic. Baby Blue Convertible) … but I keep overheating at around 140 degrees. That didn’t seem right. Hot, but not dangerous. UNTIL – I realized the gauges were European and it was 140 degrees celsius … 284 F. Ouch, burn, cracked block.
You have to know your vehicle people.
So, as I am adjusting to what is good – moderate – dangerous … I am learning. But, all is good, just gotta watch long hauls, long hauls with heavier loads, long hauls with heavier loads up the mountain range of the Rocky Mountain highways west of Denver.
Back to Moab. 1:30 AM.
Turning into the road/driveway/fire road/rocky way at 1:15am – I barely saw it. Very dark here and a thunder storm was approaching. It was not paved, just a gravel entrance are that quickly turned to worse than gravle.
Right into the entrance, yo had a choice …
– traight ahead through a farm gate with cattle bridge – with a “Private Drive, do not enter” sign
– a right into a seemingly rocky fire road looking path. (remember, it was dark)
We made a quick wrong turn – and went right – and we were on an unmarked, washed out, rocky and gullied outback path not suitable for even my FJ I left at home. I turned around after 20 yards, but not before Lisa had to get out and make sure I didn’t go true ditch diving. I like the new Wilderness – not once did I scrap rock. Great clearance.
We arrived, got settled into our tent. We are not campers, but this was glamping (look it up). Canvas tent. Bed. Sheets. Water. Shower. All inside the tent. No electricity but they provided battery cells to run chargers and small fans.
No closet space – but for camping – I was okay, better than okay.
We slept comfortably. But we were sore from 36 hours on the road.
Tomorrow … we hit Arches National Park and Canyonland National Park. I hoped at least, for at that point, I wasn’t sure if I would want to get up.
But we did – and ANP & CNP are majestically awesome.
