Nestled in the historic district of downtown Lynchburg, the Downtown YMCA offers a unique blend of modern fitness amenities and classic charm.
For 150 years the YMCA has played an important role in Lynchburg, remaining relevant by adapting with the times. The Lynchburg association was organized in 1856 as a place where young men could attend Bible classes and gain work skills. During the Civil War, members volunteered to serve on the battlefield, delivering food, coffee, and medical supplies to the soldiers. The current YMCA would hardly be recognized by the generations of country boys who came to the city to seek their fortunes. In the early stages of their careers, many young men, including some of Lynchburg’s most prominent citizens, relied on the Y to provide them with practical training classes, hot baths, and inexpensive lodging. This downtown location goes back around a century. The building, called classic by many, is basically old. Yes, updates have been done. It has modern equipment. Yet, in many ways, it is like stepping back in time when you look at the style, the structure, lights and more.

But fear not, almost 3 years ago, the Lynchburg Y set a 11.5 million dollar campaign for a new building. And though it reports over half raised, I’m not sure where they stand.

Why am I sharing this? For yesterday, I did something I have never done – I joined a YMCA … A step to better health, an access to facilities that meet all need at the present, and because I liked the lap pool. I even used it on day one.
I hope to get better prepared for the road trip. I plan on working my stiff joints. And what other benefits I obtain, I will be very grateful.
My real world outlook …
I do truly focus on my eternal destination. I realize this earth is not my final resting place. This perishable will be replaced with imperishable. However, I have a responsibility to take care of this body. So, until this body breathes its last, I will strive to be a good steward.
And know this, I have miles to go before I sleep – miles to go before I sleep.
What about you? What are you doing to take care of what God has given you?
The Y is a tool. What tools are you using?
