Love Where You Live

Last night, (2/24/26), we had a remembrance and celebration service for the 10th Anniversary of a Category-3 Tornado that swept through our community.

We sang, had prayer led by the brother of the one-man who lost his life, heard from survivors and from rebuilders. Though many names were listed, many ministries thanked, and many helpers acknowledged … we fell way short on truly honoring the myriad of people and organizations that gave a helping hand. And there are so many unnamed. So I hope each and every one knows their kindness is appreciated.

One of the cool things we tried to do was have people fill out a postcard on things they loved about our community. Here are some of the responses …

  • People watch out for each other
  • Awesome place to grow up! (note: Exclamation should have a heart as the dot!)
  • Helpful
  • Home
  • Support
  • Friends coming together to help each other in a time of crisis – Evergreen Strong
  • Unity of heart through good & hard
  • Love & Compassion will always outlive disaster in this community
  • The calming, peaceful atmosphere.
  • The community is a family.
  • So many great people & sweet memories (insert a heart!)
  • The Shorter family
  • Beautiful sunrises

I’ve lived urban … Dallas proper, NoVa.
I’ve lived suburban … all around outside Dallas, Huntersville, Suffolk, Richmond, Wake Forest and more.
I’ve lived rural … Ball, LA and Evergreen, VA. (Ball was in a parish with not a single red light and almost non existent cell phone coverage in many parts)
Each have strengths and each have … shortcomings.

But that list up there about my community is great and right to point. But I would add so many more …

  • 90 minutes to the mountains (And they are calling)
  • 2.5 hours to the beach (though I prefer the mountains)
  • 3 hours to DC (museums, history, excitement)
  • Waking up to rooster and cow noises
  • Almost no traffic – It is a delay if I have to sit through a red light more than once
  • Stars can be seen
  • Joe Beans
  • People really care

I love where I live.

I do miss – – my grandkids … the plethora and variety of restaurants … time with my son …

BUT … I LOVE WHERE I LIVE.
