What’s On Your Wall?

You sit at a desk all day. You recline in your chair reading or watching TV. You snuggle in your gaming chair while playing your online Legend of Zelda to Final Fantasy. Me, It’s the Oculus Quest with Beat Saber or watching 360 videos of National Parks.

No matter where we spend our time, we all have walls all around us … bricks, cinderblocks, wood, panel, sheet-rock, bamboo (Think Gilligan’s Island) or whatever.

Now the question begs, what is on your walls? Is it pictures of your kids? Diplomas or certifications? Your wedding day memorabilia? Or is it blank … just awaiting decisions on deportations … just remaining blank to keep life simple.

For me, I have four walls. Three sides are covered up.

In front of me is three bookshelves (fixed to the wall) that have my most current books being used and necessary tools (pens, first aid Kirts, journals, card stock paper.) I also have reminders of my hiking trips (maps, mugs, memorabilia).

To my left are three more bookshelves with books and a few Christmas decorations. Behind them is a space I use for storage – a makeshift closet with lots of stuff with no where else to go.

Behind me, between the few windows that allow a view to the outside, are three bookshelves that were my mother’s. They now will always adorn my office. On them are my journals with homiletical notes from the decades of sermons and studies. Also, there are some Biblical iconic items that draw attention to the culture surrounding the Ancient Near East … a shofar, a menorah, a prayer shawl, and more. I do have a single photo of my wife as an endearing beautiful child.

To my left … this is what prompted my post.

I have about a dozen flat signs of metal, wood and canvas. They remind me of places I have been and journeys I have taken.

  • Wooden NPS sign
  • Going to the Sun sign
  • A Toyota FJ sign
  • Route 66 sign
  • License plates (VA & TX – “Hik VA” … yeah yeah, but the HIKE VA is on my FJ)
  • Blue Ridge Parkway North/South sign

And in the middle of them all, is a canvas art piece that was from my first grandchild’s second Christmas … an ink imprint of his feet with the phrase “Mistle-Toes” … too cute!

What a wonderful center to a wall that brings joy upon which to look. What does this wall mean to me? What does what you have on your wall mean to you?

The wall, well, the items on the wall, inspire me …

  • To remember the joyous moments and trips and treks in which I have participated
  • To reflect on the central joy my grandkids bring to my very heart
  • To remind me to not stop my journey and my appreciation of God’s great creation (for I have more space to be filled!)

What about you? What’s on your wall? What does it tell you? What does it tell others about you?

NOTE – most my pics are as wall paper and screen savers on my monitors. But I do have pics on the wall at home. Here are three murals I had made honoring each grandson’s birth.
