No Longer With Us, But Still Remains

No Longer With Us …

Who are some of the people that are no longer with us but you still have a tendency to quote? Your parents, grandparents? A famous author. Outside of the Bible of course, who are those that left an impact on you?

There are great people of history or renown authors …

  • Et Tu Brutus?
  • Here I stand, I can do no other!
  • Give me liberty or give me death!
  • Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Maybe great lines from movies …

  • Love means never having to say your sorry
  • I’ll be back
  • To boldly go where no man has gone before
  • Luke, I am your father

(Wow, I just realized 3 out of 4 are from Sci Fi)

But one of the actual people I have met, one who I love to read his works, who was friends with my father … is Vance Havner. Native of Jugtown, NC … this fiesty speaker was writing sermons from age 9, licensed to preach at 12, and ordained at 15 … author of over 35 books .. dubbed “the most quoted preacher in America” by Billy Graham.

I was young, but I remember him. And his works still touch lives … but I challenge the Zoomers and Alphas to get to know the many … with his fiery blend of truth and humor.

……..

“God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power than ever.”

“We are suffering today from a species of Christianity as dry as dust, as cold as ice, as pale as a corpse, and as dead as King Tut. We are suffering not from a lack of correct heads but of consumed hearts.”

“Worry is like a rocking chair. It will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.”

“The temple of truth has never suffered so much from woodpeckers on the outside as from termites within.”

“The great tragedy of today is that the situation is desperate, but the saints are not.”

“Most church members live so far below the standard; we are so subnormal that if we were to become normal, people would think we were abnormal.”

“It is the conscious present of God in the life that makes a Christian a different person set apart from all others.”

As I am reading his work, Though I Walk Through the Valley, I am reminded Jesus is our only true Hope, for us who are grieving and have wounded hearts. We all walk through the valley at some times in our lives. And we have that hope that out last everything.
